Pet Surgery

Welcome to our Veterinary Surgery Services page!

At Community Animal Hospital we understand that your pet’s health is paramount. Our skilled veterinarians are equipped to handle a wide range of surgical procedures with the highest level of care and expertise. We are proud to be an AAHA-accredited practice, which means we meet rigorous standards for veterinary care, including superior anesthetic safety protocols. Here’s a look at some of the surgical services we offer:

Routine Spay and Neuter

We believe that spaying and neutering are essential steps in ensuring your pet’s well-being and contributing to a healthier, happier community of animals. These simple, safe procedures not only prevent unwanted litters but also offer numerous health benefits for your furry friends.

Spaying and neutering can reduce the risk of certain cancers, eliminate the risk of ovarian and uterine infections, and decrease behaviors such as roaming, marking, and aggression.

Trust our experienced team to provide compassionate care and expert guidance through every step of the process. Our experienced veterinarians perform these procedures with precision and care, ensuring a quick recovery for your furry friend. We utilize the latest techniques to minimize pain and maximize safety.

Mass Removal and Comprehensive Histopathology Reports

Mass removal is a critical procedure for diagnosing and treating tumors, cysts, or other abnormal growths. Our doctors carefully remove masses with precision, and we provide comprehensive histopathology reports from outside labs to analyze the nature of the tissue. These reports help in diagnosing conditions accurately and planning appropriate follow-up care. Our detailed pathology reports are essential for ensuring your pet’s health and guiding further treatment if necessary.

Laceration and Abscess Repair

Lacerations and abscesses can be painful and may require immediate attention. Our team is skilled in repairing these injuries, whether they result from accidents, bites, or other causes. We clean, debride, and close lacerations to promote optimal healing, while abscesses are drained and treated to prevent infection and facilitate recovery. Our goal is to ensure your pet’s comfort and to restore their skin’s integrity and health as quickly as possible.

Orthopedic Cruciate Repair

Cruciate ligament injuries are common in dogs, often causing lameness and pain. Dr Shelley is experienced in repairing these injuries using techniques such as Extracapsular Lateral Suture Stabilization (ELSS), a common surgical technique to address cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries in dogs.

Splenectomy

A splenectomy, the surgical removal of the spleen, may be necessary due to conditions like tumors or traumatic injuries. Our team is skilled in performing this procedure with meticulous care to ensure the best possible outcome and post-operative recovery for your pet.

Foreign Body Removal

If your pet has ingested something harmful or non-digestible, timely removal is crucial. We use advanced imaging techniques and surgical expertise to locate and remove foreign bodies safely, preventing further complications and ensuring a swift recovery.

Enucleation

Enucleation, or the removal of the eye, may be necessary due to severe injury, infection, or disease. Our surgeons are experienced in performing this delicate procedure with the utmost care, ensuring your pet’s comfort and well-being throughout the process.

Cherry Eye

Cherry eye, the prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid, can cause discomfort and infection. Our team can correct this condition through a surgical procedure that restores the gland to its proper position, relieving discomfort and preventing future issues.

Entropion

Entropion is a condition where the eyelid rolls inward, causing irritation and potential damage to the eye. Our veterinarians perform entropion correction surgery to reposition the eyelid, providing relief and protecting your pet’s vision.

Anesthetic Procedure

At Community Animal Hospital, we prioritize the safety and comfort of your pet during any surgical procedure. Our AAHA accreditation ensures that we follow stringent guidelines for anesthetic safety, including:

  • Pre-Anesthetic Screening: Comprehensive blood tests and assessments to ensure your pet is healthy enough for surgery.
  • Customized Anesthetic Plan: Tailored to your pet’s specific needs, age, and health condition.
  • Monitoring: Continuous monitoring with our eight-point monitoring system of vital signs throughout the procedure to detect any changes immediately.
  • Pain Management: Advanced pain control techniques to ensure your pet experiences minimal discomfort post-surgery.

What To Expect for your Pet

During surgery, your pet will be placed under a form of anesthesia. To help ensure the safety of your pet, most procedures include placement of an IV catheter and administration of IV fluids. This enables us to maintain your pet’s blood pressure and supplies immediate emergency access in the rare event it is needed.

We strongly encourage, and in some cases require pre-anesthetic blood screening. This allows us to be aware of potential problems and plan accordingly. An individual anesthetic protocol is tailored for your pet by one of our veterinarians; this enables us to provide adequate pain relief and the smoothest recovery possible.

While your pet is under anesthesia, he/she will be monitored on a state-of-the-art multi-parameter machine. This tracks heart and respiratory rates, end-tidal CO2, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and temperature. They are also closely watched by the doctor and one of our highly trained veterinary staff.

Because their comfort is a top priority for us, ALL pets undergoing surgical procedures will receive pain medication at the time of surgery. Depending on the invasiveness of certain procedures, oral medication for pain will be sent home.

Benefits of AAHA Accreditation

Being an AAHA-accredited practice means we adhere to the highest standards in veterinary care, including rigorous protocols for anesthetic safety, surgical cleanliness, and patient care. This accreditation assures you that your pet is in the best hands, with access to top-notch equipment and experienced veterinary professionals dedicated to their health and well-being.
